In times of old, our heroes and heroines used to be warriors and cowboys, but in the modern age it’s all about movie stars and sports stars. And so here’s a list of some of the national sporting treasures of the movie world.

Brad Pitt

Undoubtedly the king of modern cinema, Brad Pitt has managed to become more than just a pretty face through his phenomenal acting skills and uncanny ability to pick some great roles. From breakthrough performances in the likes of Seven, to being a baseball manager in acclaimed sports drama Moneyball, Pitt has displayed an unwavering talent and determination to become a true national treasure.

Shaquille O’Neal

Few sporting stars have made such an illustrious switch from stadiums to the silver screen. But then few sporting stars are as charismatic or as physically imposing as Shaq. When he recently took a tumble live on American TV, he cemented his reputation as an American national treasure. And it’s that warm-hearted personality that has made him the perfect fit for kids’ movies such as The Lego Movie and Smurfs 2.

Sandra Bullock

In the course of her career in Hollywood to become one of the silver screen’s highest earning female stars, Sandra Bullock has managed to be both massively successful and instantly likeable. From her breakthrough role in Demolition Man, to her Academy Award winning performance in NFL drama The Blind Side, Bullock has always shown a real human spirit through roles that are perfectly suited to making her an all American heroine.

Tom Cruise

Another A-lister who must be considered a national treasure is Tom Cruise. Despite some unconventional interview appearances, he’s never strayed from being a massive draw at the box office with films like Top Gun and the Mission: Impossible series. But one of his most iconic appearances must be the title role of Jerry Maguire that saw him winning an Academy Award for his portrayal of a sports agent who has a moral epiphany.

Clint Eastwood

And finally, for a true American national treasure, then look no further than Clint Eastwood. He rose to international prominence through his role as the Man with No Name in a series of spaghetti westerns, and the Dirty Harry series cemented his reputation as a hard-bitten anti-hero. But Eastwood has also displayed admirable diversity as seen through his roles in the intense boxing drama Million Dollar Baby as well as his recent directorial work with films such as Gran Torino and American Sniper.
