Affleck not directing JUSTICE LEAGUE movie Wachowski Bros. the new rumor

In the wake of the monster numbers that Marvel’s The Avengers threw up this summer, everyone has been clamoring for details on DC’s marquee super team, The Justice League of America. It was reported earlier this month that Ben Affleck (Phantoms) was in negotiations to helm the film which showcases Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Auquaman, and The Green Lantern. Affleck has created a new persona for himself as a director over the last couple years, having success with films like Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and the soon to be released Argo. Recently though it seemed like Affleck was not the man for the job, he recently signed on to direct a new adaptation of Steven King’s The Stand which seems to have a conflicting timeframe. He also has a preference for directing dramatic pieces. Affleck officially debunked the JLA rumors this weekend, telling 24 Hour Vancouver;

“I’m not working on the Justice League. One of the problems with entertainment web sites is that they need to fill pages, and that’s how rumours get started… Justice League sounds really exciting, but it’s not something I’m working on.”

The original story originated from Variety, so it is more than likely that Warner Bros. was either seriously considering Affleck, or he was offered and passed.

It’s not all bad news for JLA though. Movie Hole is reporting that the Wachowski “Brothers” (Matrix / Cloud Atlas) are on a shortlist of directors Warner Bros. is considering. Warner has been very vocal about their excitement for the highly ambitious Cloud Atlas. Very reminiscent of the Matrix films, first glimpses of Cloud Atlas have excited and amazed while giving nothing of the tale away. News of a Wachowski Bros. directed JLA is all speculation right now, even if they were offered the job there are several other hurdles to consider. The Wachowski’s are notorious for their desire to maintain “creative freedom”, even going so far as to finance Cloud Atlas independently rather than make concessions to a studio. They are also prepping the big budget Sci-Fi film Jupiter Ascending. Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis have reportedly already signed on for what is being touted as the first part of a planned trilogy.

I am sure there will be much more to come in the JLA production story. Warner Bros. has tried to get this project off the ground for many years now. With the success of The Avengers, DC knows that a film of this scope can work, now they just need to find the right pieces to fit it all together like Marvel did.

What do you think? Let us know below. Who would you like to see direct the film? Other than the big three, which characters would you like to see in it? Maybe some love for The Martian Man Hunter?
