2013 Spike VGX Awards

SATURDAY DECEMBER 7 AT 6 PM ET / 3 PM PT

It’s that time of year gamers when we celebrate what’s most important in our geeky lives… video games. Tonight we will be live-blogging the entire 2013 Spike VGX Awards with constant updates for this year’s winners.

– 3PM and we’re off, Joel McHale and Geoff Keighley host tonight’s event. We will see new footage from Titanfall, Thief, The Division and much more!

-3:05PM World premiere of Telltale Games Tales From the Borderlands. Handsome Jack is looking dapper as ever and players will take on the role of new characters… not vault hunters.

-3:15 PM World premiere of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Tomb Raider was one of our favorite games in 2013 and we look forward to watching Lara kick next-gen ass. The game is not a port, but rather rebuilt for next-gen platforms. Look for it in January 2014.

-3:23 PM Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag wins Best Action Adventure Game.

-3:26 PM A look at Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. We see Cranky Kong rocking his cane bounce and collecting bananas. There is a Kong-Pow move that will eliminate all enemies on the screen. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will be available on February 21, 2014.

-3:32 PM Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime is happy with the Wii U and quotes Forbes Magazine saying “Nintendo is the console to get this holiday season.”

-3:40 PM NBA 2K14 wins Best Sports Game.

-3:42 PM World Premiere of new gameplay footage for Quantum Break. The end of time is coming… Payers will need to master “time powers” in order to defeat the big bad known as Monarch. The game features digital doubles of the actors to capture emotions in their face for enhanced storytelling.

-3:56 PM World premiere of new footage from South Park The Stick of Truth. Nothing terribly exciting, just the ability to “cup a spell.”

-4 PM Matt Stone and Trey Parker announce the winner for Game of the Year – Grand Theft Auto V.

-4:05 PM World premiere look at new footage for Destiny. Some of the video we’ve seen before during Sony’s launch event for PS4. Destiny will be available for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4 on September 9, 2014. Pre-order the game now for beta access next summer.

-4:13 PM Tim Schafer brings a demo of the point and click puzzle game Broken Age. The game features a young boy and girl leading parallel lives. The girl was chosen by her village to be sacrificed to monster, only she decides to fight the monster instead. The boy (voiced by Elijah Wood) is on a spaceship living a solitary life under the care of a motherly computer.

-4:27 PM World premiere look at the Snowdrop engine used in The Division.

-4:30 PM VGX Host Joel McHale announced Gone Home as the Best Independent Game.

-4:33 PM Telltale Games – A Game of Thrones game. Still trying to figure out which characters will be involved, but there will be battles and QTE.

-4:40 PM World premiere of No Man’s Sky from Hello Games for next-gen. We got a look under the sea, a desert planet, Dune-like worms, and space battles. Sean Murray from Hello Games is on set to talk about the game. Interestingly, only 4 people are making this game.

-4:52 PM Demo for Dying Light, the hardcore parkour zombie survival game. Players will be running up walls and slaying zombies to their heart’s content.

-5:04 PM World premiere of the story trailer for Thief. Garrett is a sneaky bastard and you had best check your pockets, suckas. The game launches for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC on February 25, 2014.

-5:10 PM Bioshock Infinite is awarded Best Shooter.

-5:13 PM World premiere of The Witcher 3. Holy smokes this game looks beautiful.

-5:15 PM Naughty Dog wins Studio of the Year.

-5:18 PM It’s time for Titanfall! Respawn Entertainment is on hand to reveal a new Titan, the Ogre. This heavy armored Titan can be used to donkey punch your opponents. Titanfall is a must for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC. Bring it home on March 11, 2014.

-5:28 PM Live musical performances of the music from Grand Theft Auto V.

-5:47 PM We’re back with Joel and Geoff.

-5:52 PM More Titanfall! Hammond Robotics has got the goods including another Titan. The Stryder is light-weight with the ability to outperform other titans in speed, acceleration and agility.

-5:55 PM Back to the live music.

-5:58 PM Credits. They didn’t even announce the winners for all the categories. Lame.
