15 Drunken Minutes with Forza Horizon 2 at SDCC

Forza Horizon 2

Two weeks ago we had the opportunity to get our drunken hands on Forza Horizon 2 at a Microsoft media event during San Diego Comic-Con. Of course you should never drink and drive, but this is a video game and no one was hurt (bots or otherwise). I did enjoy myself quite a bit, but that could have been the booze. Actually, I was able to get three races in and had a blast!

Right off the bat the first thing I noticed was the time of day and weather changes. If you played Forza Motorsport 5, then you’ll remember how each track was usually set around dusk or dawn. That time of day got old pretty quickly and this time around you’ll have more of a variety. The weather system is different as well. No longer will you be racing in optimum weather conditions. No sir, you’ll encounter rain storms which provide hazardous conditions on the roadways.

Traffic is another cause for safety concerns. Not only do you have to compete against other drivers, but now there are innocent motorists in your path. Luckily, for you (and them) the rewind feature still exists. I decided that because I was racing impaired, I would not use the rewind button and just live with my mistakes. Not surprisingly, my car barely made it to the finish line. I should mention that wasn’t entirely due to hitting other vehicles. In Forza Horizon 2, players can venture off the main course to find shortcuts and other paths that could give you the edge. Don’t be afraid to plow through a fence to see if there’s a more efficient way to get out in front of the pack.

Forza Horizon 2 runs at a stunning 1080p and brings Europe to life while exceeding speeds of 200 mph. That night was a bit of a blur, but the game still stands out in my mind. Finishing in last place never felt so rewarding.

Forza Horizon 2 will launch for Xbox One on September 30.
